And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.
John 8:32
There is much debate going on today around the inerrancy of scripture. Simply stated, “is the Bible true”. Does it stand without error even though it was recorded by imperfect and sinful humans?
We might as well get that one out of the way first. Yes, the Bible was recorded and written down by us and we are sinners that have errors in our lives. The world would have us to believe that the whole case to be made about the Bible is about us and that God’s Word is of some human origin and interpretation. Paul was clear in his encouragement to Timothy that God’s Word is His alone.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
”All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
The Truth is the Truth
The point of the Bible is Jesus Christ. The Old Testament points to His coming to complete God’s plan of salvation in our lives. The Gospels record His birth, life, death, and resurrection that we might know by many faithful witnesses that His life is True. The remainder of the New Testament instructs us as His Church and points to His coming again to gather us home.
All scripture has been given by God to us for the support and uplifting of our lives.
Why is it such a big challenge for us that God relayed His word to us through broken people? Well, broken people are all that He has to work with since we were given the free will choice to love Him, and we chose to love ourselves.
We should not be pulled off track by the world into this discussion of errors in God’s Word. The Word represents God in every real and tangible way in our lives. His part in our lives is perfect –
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5
To entertain that His Word has errors in it is to open our door of understanding to Satan. He will walk right into that door and start pointing out errors from Genesis to Revelation. Each lie will unwrap usually one or two words and those will lead to one or two more until we have unraveled God’s purpose for our lives. Once any one thing is found or “declared” to be false or out of context it opens up the entire Bible for discussion on its errors.
Some things in life can be very complicated but we should not allow this to be one of them. If any part God’s Word is wrong then the whole Bible can be wrong. If God’s Word is TRUE then it is ALL TRUE. The only errors in the scriptures are where we simply cannot understand and grasp it and the error then sits with us – NOT GOD!
