The cornerstone is the first stone to be laid in the building of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be placed with reference to this stone, thus defining the remainder of the structure. This stone must be of every stone in the building the most perfect. It has to be the proper height, length, and depth for it will determine the height length, and depth of the building wall. It must be perfectly square because every other stone in the building will be fitted and put in place for its purpose based on the corner.
The Psalmist writes for us here that the stone that was not useful to the builders has been made this “cornerstone” by God. The prophet Isaiah wrote that God had laid a cornerstone of great value ( Isaiah 28:16 ) for His foundation. The psalmist recognized that only God could do this, and it is “marvelous” beyond our understanding to see.
He also reminds us that this truth of the “cornerstone” Jesus Christ is available this very day. On God’s foundation, He laid the cornerstone of Jesus Christ so that we might be able to build our lives on Him. From the corner, the rest of His building – the Church – will be built. We can live each day under the knowledge that God has given us both a firm foundation and a perfect cornerstone to build from.
There are still many today that reject this stone of Jesus Christ. When Peter quoted from this Psalm in his sermon from Acts 4:11-12 he was clear that any other opinion on the cornerstone is not a truth. He wrote that there is only one way, one name whereby we may be saved and that is Jesus Christ.
We may walk by the cornerstones of many buildings in a day and hardly ever take notice, but it does not make them not real. One can ignore or deny the cornerstone of God’s Church, but it does not make it irrelevant. The marvelous work done by Christ on the cross under the power of God set in place our cornerstone forever.
May we plant our feet on God’s foundation and build our lives from the living corner of Jesus Christ.
