Christ himself is the preeminent Living Stone, and the cornerstone of His creation, the Church. We as His Church are much like the believers that Peter wrote this letter to in his day. We have made a confession of faith in the cornerstone and in so doing we have been baptized into Jesus’ death with Him and raised to a new spiritual life in this world.
In our culture and society today, Christians certainly do not feel like a “priesthood” of any type and neither did the believers of Peter’s day. They and their faith had been marginalized as too far-fetched to be real. They were insulted for their lack of spiritual intelligence in not knowing that the messiah would set up a military kingdom bringing everything under His rule and life for Christians would all be happy and peaceful.
Much like the “feel good” and “prosperity” gospel of our day that tells us if you are not in a happy place then it is because you need to relax – you are just too hung up on this sin thing to be happy. In this way many are rejecting the faith today by acting as if they have fully embraced it and hold in themselves the very keys to salvation. Peter told the religious and political leaders of his day that this Jesus they killed and rejected, God had raised from the dead and set Him at His right hand as the cornerstone of His Church.
Jesus told Peter in Matthew 16 that upon the “rock” of Peter’s confession He would build His Church and the gates of hell would not conquer it. ( Matthew 16:18 ).
David wrote that, The stone which the builders rejected has become the head stone of the corner. This is the Lord’s work and is marvelous in our eyes. Psalms 118:22 -23
We are being built into that structure by Jesus, for in his resurrection and our baptism, we have been made alive with him. It is critical for us to see that we do not build the structure but are built or placed into it as a part of living our lives through Jesus.
The builder is the Spirit of God who is at work always and everywhere in our lives.
The Church that we are built into is not a building where we go to meet on Sunday’s – it is who we are, it is what we do every day. The life that He lives through us by the Holy Spirit is what bonds us together as stones and allows us together to accomplish and build so much more for Him than we ever could alone.
