If we get stopped and ticketed for speeding, then the power of our transgression sits completely with the law of the posted speed that we violated. The power of the law is reflected in the cost and consequence of our transgression.
So it is with our lives – our guidebook ( The Bible ) has our limits and directions to live by. When we transgress ( sin ) against one of them then it is that very specific law that convicts us of our wrong. In our traffic scenario, we go to court or pay a fine to cover our transgression. In our lives there is no way to avoid our sins or transgressions, we were born into sin.
For I was born a sinner — yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
Psalm 51:5 NLT
We could try to make amends to cover our sins, but we cannot because God is perfect and cannot be in the presence of sin – God sent Jesus to live a perfect human life, die a death He did not deserve, to atone for our sins because we cannot live a life worthy of eternal life with God. God’s Word will always convict us of our sins because that is the power that His Word brings to our lives. Paul told Timothy as much in his final writing that we have in the New Testament:
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Conviction
Paul tells Timothy that the power of the Word will not only show us what is wrong in our lives but also “teaches us to do what is right”. The power in conviction lies in our recognition of the grace we have from God in Jesus Christ.
The victory we have through Him allows us to come to God because of what Jesus did in dying on the cross for our forgiveness. Our conviction and the resulting action are to allow His power to change our lives so that we may change the lives of others.
