Bible Study on Colossians
The Church in Colossae was like Rome, not one that Paul started but a Church he cared deeply about. Paul cared about the Colossians because of the common association they shared with Epaphras, the pastor in Colossae. Epaphras was most likely a convert of Paul’s while he was in Ephesus and he has gone back to visit Paul during his imprisonment in Rome.
The congregation in Colossae was being influenced by a group called Gnostics. They were trying to develop and spread a twist on the gospel of Jesus Christ by claiming to have a special knowledge that only they could provide in living a true Christian life. Paul writes Colossians to help keep the Church there centered in Jesus before they are pulled too far off track.
This writing finds us today as a New Testament Church still struggling with our interpretation and application of the Gospel by applying our “special” knowledge to go with salvation rather than just Jesus.
